Cancer Cell Biology Training Program

Activities

Program Requirements

The overriding goal of this training program is to produce graduate students who are not only well-versed in molecular and cellular biology, but additionally, have received significant training in cancer histology and pathobiology, cancer diagnosis, cancer treatment, and anticancer drug discovery. In order to achieve this goal, students who are supported on the training grant are expected to complete a core curriculum of five required courses.

GNET 621 and GNET 631: Advanced Molecular Biology I & II
CBIO 644: Cell Structure, Function and Growth Control II (Super Cell)
PATH 725: Cancer Pathobiology
PHCO 737: Target-based drug discovery and cancer treatment

Students will need to fulfill both the departmental (or curriculum) and training program requirements in order to graduate. However, as detailed below, this "double jeopardy" should not in fact pose any undue burden. Since the interdepartmental courses of GNET 110, GNET 111, and Supercell are compatible with the majority of departmental and curricula requirements, students should find it relatively easy to satisfy this requirement for the Program. The experience with the trainees selected for the Program during the past four years is that those students with a strong interest in cancer-related studies will have already chosen to take these courses, prior to admission to the Program. The PATH 725 course, designed specifically for the Program, would be the only course that students, other than those in the Department of Pathology, in the Program may need to add to their course load in the second year of training.

Although not required, CCBTP offers several additional training opportunities to our grantees.  These include the Clinical Shadowing Program, joint interactions with the HHMI Translational Medicine Program, etc.  For further information on these opportunities, please see the Activities tab.
