Objectives:
The UNC Michael Hooker Proteomics Core Facility is a modern proteomics facility, which provides UNC LCCC members with state-of-the-art equipment and highly-skilled scientists for successful proteomics studies. LCCC researchers can utilize proteomic technologies to answer questions such as the role of various genetic disorders in cancer development, study changes in protein expression and modification during tumorigenesis or metastasis on a genome-wide basis, and examine the effects of different treatments examined on the molecular level.

Services:
We provide:

-Identification of Gel-Separated Proteins: Proteins are identified by peptide mass fingerprinting or peptide fragment ions produced by either MALDI-MS, MALDI-MS/MS or capLC-ESI-MS/MS.

-Protein Expression Profiling By 2D-PAGE & Mass Spectrometry: Changes in protein expression can be detected by comparing 2-D gel images using an imager and sophisticated image analysis software.

-Protein Molecular Weight Determination and Characterization: Accurate molecular weight information is used provide information about the modification type and modification status. Modification sites are determined by MS/MS sequencing.

Policies:
To achieve the highest possible chance of success, we recommend that new projects be discussed with Core staff prior to submission. Please e-mail proteomics@med.unc.edu to set up an appointment.
Submission forms and recommended sample preparation protocols are posted on our website: http://proteomics.unc.edu

Charges:
Our current fees are kept low to encourage use. Preliminary proteomics analyses are free for UNC LCCC members applying for P01 and R01 grants.
Our standard rates are posted on our website, http://proteomics.unc.edu

Staff:
We currently have 6 FTEs in the Facility. These include experts in protein identification, protein characterization, gel- and HPLC-based separations, and a computer systems manager. The facility also provides partial support for the Faculty Director and a specialist in nanospray-MS and de novo peptide sequencing.

The Faculty Director is Dr. Christoph Borchers.

Location:
Medical Research Building A, adjacent to the LCCC
