Animal Models Core Facility

Room: 4135 Neuroscience Research Building
Director(s): Terry Van Dyke, Faculty Director

Hours: 9-5, M-F
Phone: (919) 843-9125
Fax: (919) 962-4296
Email: thresher@email.unc.edu

Services:
The Facility makes animal models of human disease for medical researchers by creating genetically modified mice. Transgenic and gene-targeted animals are generated from DNA constructs provided by clients. The Facility provides guidance and all the technical services needed to create genetically modified mice. It also provides basic support technologies and develops new technologies. Vectors for creating gene deletions or duplications, for developing Cre-lox or inducible systems, for making single-site insertions and for utilizing plug-socket gene replacement strategies are available from the facility. Facility staff work closely with clients and Histopathology Core staff to phenotype the animals by anatomic, physiologic and molecular characterizations.

Other services include:

Rapid PCR and Southern hybridization
DNA fragment purification and testing
Embryo re-derivation, sperm and embyro cryopreservation
in vitro fertilization and ovary transplants
Morulae aggregation

Staff:
Dr. Terry Van Dyke, professor of genetics, is the faculty advisor. Dr. Randy Thresher is the facility director of our team, which includes microinjection specialists Jade Zhang and Kimberly Kluckman, tissue culture specialist Ray Fox, and molecular/genotyping specialists George Altshuller and Shiliang Wang.

Facility is located in 4135 Neuroscience Research Building and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday.
