Research Interests
My areas of research interests are in gastrointestinal cancer and palliative medicine. I
am involved in translational research in pharmacology and biochemistry of agents used in these settings.

Clinical trials and gastrointestinal cancer at all disease sites in this organ system. I continue to be involved with clinical research studies at the Phase II and Phase III level, both industrial studies and cooperative group studies. I have also developed investigator initiated studies at this institution.

I am also the Co-Director of the Pain and Symptom Care (Palliative Care) Program at UNC, which is funded by the Duke Endowment. As such, I provide consultative services and administrative oversight for the grant as well as clinical services. I am doing this work in conjunction with Dr. Laura Hanson, in the Division of Geriatrics. UNC is among the 15 percent of academic institutions that now have a palliative care program. We are also incorporating clinical information into an approved research database. We will be analyzing this data over the next several years and hope to establish additional interventional and epidemiologic studies in this area.

Cancer prevention. I am the local principal investigator for the breast cancer prevention trial of the NSABP. (P2)
