Research Interests
Bonnie C. Yankaskas, Ph.D. directs the Carolina Mammography Registry (CMR), which was funded by DOD in 1994 and NCI since 1995 to study the practice of and outcomes from breast cancer screening mammography at the community level. A mammography and a pathology database are being built from primary data collected in the community. Data is being prospectively collected directly from mammography facilities including demographic data, breast history data, reason for and findings on the screening mammogram, data on other radiologic studies necessary to resolve the screening assessment and recommendations for follow-up. Cancer pathology data is received from pathology laboratories, from mammography practices and from the NC Central Cancer Registry. Breast cancer and breast benign pathology data are collected. Outcome data in the pathology database include date and type of pathology, method of biopsy, date of biopsy and breast site, number of nodes tested and number positive, estrogen and progesterone receptor status, tumor grade and stage. At the end of June 2003, there were 80 facilities actively participating in the project. There were just over 1,013,000 records among 429,250 individual women who reside in North Carolina and have their screening mammograms in facilities located in 39 counties in NC.
The project is presently funded through 2005. The emphasis for this funding cycle is for studying mammography use and breast cancer survival in Native American women in NC. Work continues evaluating performance of mammography under different circumstances, in different settings, in different populations. Information on the Registry can be found at http://cmr.unc.edu/.
The Registry is part of the National Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium (BCSC) and national research projects are also in progress. In addition, work continues as part of the International Breast Cancer Screening Network to evaluate the feasibility of comparison of international breast cancer screening mammography performance. More information on the BCSC can be found at: http://breastscreening.cancer.gov/
Colorectal Screening

Dr. Yankaskas is working in collaboration with David F. Ransohoff, MD, a gastroenterologist at UNC, to study the practice of surveillance colonoscopy after finding a polyp on screening, in community practice. This work is funded for April 2004 - March 2007. Dr. Ransohoff is PI, Dr. Yankaskas is co-PI. The CMR will be the core center to support this new community-based work.
