Research Interests
Dr. Eng's work is community-based intervention research to improve: (1) breast cancer screening and follow-up of abnormal mammogram results among rural, ethnic minority women and (2) quality of life for breast cancer survivors in rural NC. Since 1990, Dr. Eng has served as the PI for two formative research studies, funded by NCI, to examine the feasibility of early detection interventions that build on older African American women's natural helping networks. The results have led to a 10-county intervention trial, also funded by NCI, and a network of approximately 240 lay health advisors and 20 nurse advisors called Save Our Sisters. As a member of Lineberger's Breast Cancer and Cancer Control Education Program, she mentors predoctoral fellows with interests ranging from conducting participatory action research and using methods, such as "photovoice" and grounded theory, to implementing and evaluating community-based interventions.
This past year, she was nominated and selected to serve on the CDC's National Blue Ribbon Panel, a 21-member body charged with developing an approach for evaluating community interventions to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in health status. The following are Dr. Eng's new grants that were funded this year:
1. MacArthur Foundation, PI, Legitimacy, Sovereignty, and the Delivery of Public Health: A Study of Cooperation and Conflict between State and Non-State Actors in Zambia, 1/00-12/00, $57,000
2. UNC Center For AIDS Research, PI, Influence of the Social Context on African American Women's Sexual Behaviors, 3/00-2/01, $10,000
3. UNC Center for Public Service, Ueltschi Grant, Developing a Manual for Teaching Health Science Students to Use the Participatory Action Research Method of Photovoice, 1/00-6/03, $8,000
