Louise M Ball, Ph.D.

Professor
Molecular Carcinogenesis

Research Interests
Dr. Ball's laboratory is focused on understanding the mechanisms by which the body metabolises exogenous chemicals to reactive species that can damage DNA and other important cellular macromelecules, and thereby trigger alterations in cell growth that lead to cancer. Current research is directed particularly to characterization of the DNA modifications resulting from reactive oxygen species. Major past accomplishments include development of assays for biomarkers of exposure and elucidation of the importance of the gut flora in generating reactive intermediates from nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
