Instructions on how to upload files to our server and make these available for download on our website

There are two main steps in making files available on our web site. The first step is to load the files on to the server. The second step is to create a link on the Available Files page so that the files appear on the page and are available for download. Remember that any files that you place here will be available on the internet to ANYONE in the WORLD! Please be careful not place sensitive material here. We are making this method available only to facilitate the transfer of LARGE files that cannot be emailed easily.

First Step: How to upload files to our server:

To make your files available on the web you will need to upload them to our local server. This is done using Fetch in the same manner as when uploading sequence files for subsequent analysis with GCG. Simply:

1- Open Fetch 4.0.3 in OS X and establish a new connection as shown exactly in the window below. Remember that our passwords change every 90 days, so be sure to use the latest one available.

2- Drag the desired file into the Fetch window or browse through your files and select one using the "Put Files..." option at the bottom of the page.

Repeat as needed according to the number of files you need to load. When you are finished you can quit Fetch and proceed to the next step.

Second Step: How to create a link on our web page:

To create a link on the Available Files page you will need to use the BBEdit application.

1- Open BBEdit 6.1.2 in OS X and establish a new connection by going to "File" --> "Open from FTP Server" as shown in the screen below.

2-Within the "swanstromlab" directory you will find a series of files and folders (subdirectories). Find the folder named "File_Sharing" and open it. Select "available_files.html and open it. This is the file containing the actual Available Files web page. It will look like a series of codes with some text embedded in it.

3-Highlight and copy the first link available including all the code that flanks it. Insert a new line immediately below it and paste it. Press "apple + S" to save your changes.

4- In your browser (Safari, Internet Explorer etc) open the Available Files web page. If you already had it opened click on "reload", your changes should now be visible. You have just created a second link to the CFAR logo.

5- To finish substitute the name of your file between the parentheses where it says "CFAR.pdf" (brown letters). Now change the name of the link from "CFAR logo" to whatever you want (black letters). Press "apple + S" to save your changes and you are done. Reload the page and bask in the glory, you rock!
