UCRF Outreach
On February 1, the University Cancer Research Fund conducted a listening tour
event with the NC Advisory Committee on Cancer Coordination and Control. The
NC Advisory Committee is a legislatively established committee to create and
implement a statewide plan to address cancer in North Carolina. The 34-person
Committee, which meets quarterly in the Research Triangle Park, includes cancer
survivors and representatives from key organizations across the state and state
government, including academic cancer centers; the North Carolina Nurses Association;
the North Carolina Medical Society; the Old North State Medical Society; the
American Cancer Society; the North Carolina Hospital Association; the American
College of Surgeons; and the North Carolina Oncology Society.
The listening session took place during the Advisory Committee's community
meeting, which included more than 80 persons in the cancer community, including
Committee members, survivors, and representatives from organizations not formally
represented on the Committee. Dr. Richard Goldberg, Physician-In-Chief of the
NC Cancer Hospital, introduced and led the session. Drs. Tom Shea (UNC Lineberger
Associate Director for Clinical Outreach), Cathy Melvin (Director, UNC Lineberger
Dissemination Core and NC SPEED), and Michael O'Malley (UNC Lineberger Associate
Director) participated as panel members during the 45-minute session.
